Fairfield County Airport
The airport, operated by
Chris Minton, Owner of M & M Aviation, is located on Hwy 269 in the
Greenbrier section of Fairfield County. Call (803) 635-3086 or FAX (803)
635-1058. The airport features 5,000-foot runway and parallel taxiway, Jet
and 100/LL fuel, Terminal building, T-hangars, Rental cars, Rental
airplanes, Flight instruction, Pilot’s shop, stocks supplies. Following the
tracks of the old Rockton-Rion Railway (now used by the Railroad Museum) or
driving Road 269 south of Winnsboro through rolling forest lands, fields of
new-mown hay, and old homes will lead to one of Fairfield County’s
treasures, the airport. It is not something to be found easily as the only
indication is a small “Runway Road” sign, but the buildings and windsock are
clearly visible as beacons.
Flying is not a new
interest in the area as many local young men were in the Army Air Corps (now
known as the Air Force) during WWII. Originally located north of Winnsboro
in the Adger community, operations were moved in the 70’s to the present
location for longer runways and more open areas. In the ensuing years,
service has been expanded, a terminal building has been constructed , the
runway has been expanded to 5,000 feet for corporate jets, and 10 new
hangars are under construction. Chris Minton of M & M Aviation provides
multiple services including: maintenance, Certified A & P & AI,
monthly parking, flight instruction, aircraft rentals, Laser Grade Testing
Center, and fire spotting for the Forestry Commission. For transients, they
can arrange car rentals, courtesy transportation and lodging.
